“We will start off by triggering your own unique powers,” Michael said. “That will be the easiest thing to do. The purpose of your unique powers is to defend yourselves. If you follow me, I’ll take you to the gymnasium.”
“Before we start training, I would like hand out a waiver,” Allison said as Michael handed out copies of the waiver. “This waiver states that you promise not to sue us if you get injured during training.”
“How…schway,” Maddie said.
“Hey, everybody,” Shelly said. “I have more time on my hands than I thought, so I’ll help with the Shelly. I want the four of you to come after me.”
Grace and Maddie ran toward Shelly, but Shelly used her powers to create a force field. It was like Maddie and Grace ran into a wall.
“Are you two okay?” Shelly asked.
“We’re on the ground,” Maddie said. “Of course, we’re not.”
“What was the point of that?” Grace asked.
“I was trying to trigger your powers,” Shelly said. “Josh, Scott, why didn’t you come after me?”
“We’re gonna attack our mother,” Scott said.
Steve used his telekinesis to blast the next generation across the gymnasium.
“You two need to act your ages,” Steve said to Josh and Scott.
Steve and Shelly telling Josh and Scott was the ultimate insult.
“You’re turning into Grandpa, now,” Josh said.
“Watch your mouth!”
In 2016, Steve and Shelly got married.
Everybody was at the church.
“You’re about to get married, and you didn’t get a shave,” Larry said.
“If you don’t show me some respect, you can leave,” Steve said.
“Do what you want, because I don’t give a shit about you anymore. You can get married naked as far as I care. With that beard, you might as well rob a bank!”
The church bells rang, which meant the wedding was about to begin.
“Congratulations!” Larry said.
“Thanks,” Steve said.
“Get over here!” Josh yelled. His father quickly
floated toward him. However, it looked like Steve floated toward an invisible
force field. Steve hit the force field so hard, he fell to the floor.
“Steve!” Shelly yelled as all the first generation Space Time Menders rushed to his aid. “Are you okay?”
“It felt like I just got hit with a truck,” Steve said. “But I’m alright, I guess.”
Steve slowly got back to his feet. “So, Josh, it looks like you’ve inherited both your mother’s and my powers,” Steve said.
“I created the shield,” Scott said. “Or force field. Whatever you want to call it.”
“Good,” Steve said. “Now, we need to find out what Maddie and Grace’s powers are.”
“Are you sure you okay?” Michael asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Steve asked.
A short while after training, Maddie spoke to Michael in his office.
“Hey, Maddie,” Michael said.
“Hi,” Maddie said. “Do you think I’m destined to be a Space Time Mender?”
“That’s up to you. Either way, you were born with powers.”
“Do you think it’s a coincidence that I became friends with Grace, Josh, and Scott?”
“No. Melody lived next door to me and Shelly since we were kids. Steve and I joined the school newspaper. Steve dated Shelly shortly after they’ve worked together. Sarah and Melody attended a lot of the same classes together. When Sarah’s parents kicked her out for being gay, she moved in with Melody and her family. Melody introduced me to Sarah and I introduced both of them to Steve. Of course, Shelly’s my sister, and Alex is Steve’s brother. I also met your mother online. That was when the internet, cable, phone, and the radio were different things.”
“So, you all went to the same school, except Mom. She was the odd-woman out.”
“Not at all. Your mother is just as important to this team as
“Thanks for the talk.”
As Michael drove home to his wife, he thought out his relationship
with Allison, for the first time in years. Michael also thought about what
their lives were like after they broke
up, and how they ended up in space together.
Steve and Shelly weren’t the only couple who got married in 2016, Melody and Sarah got married as well.
“Hey, Mel,” Michael said. “You must be excited!”
“I am,” Melody said. “But I’m worried about Sarah. We’ve invited Sarah’s family, but none of them responded to our RSVP.”
“Did you talk to her about it?”
“I did. It seemed to help a little, but I’m not so sure.”
“Do you want me to talk to her?”
“I think Shelly’s talking to her right now.”
“That’s good. Anyway, I’ll go find my seat. But before I go, I’m curious about something. Who’s taking whose last name?”
“Sarah’s last name is River. My last name is Song, so our last name is going to be River-Song.”
“Nice. Well, I’ll let you continue to get ready. You look great in that wedding dress.”
As Melody and Sarah walked down the aisle, Michael saw Allison
sitting in a few rows in front of him. Michael barely thought about Allison for
almost a year until he saw her with another man. Michael realized it was
ridiculous that he was getting jealous, but he couldn’t help how he felt.
The reception had an open bar, so Michael drank. That’s when Melody and Sarah talked to him.
“How are you doing?” Melody said.
“Good,” Michael said. “Thanks for askin, B’y!”
“Michael, it’s been almost two years since you and Allison broke up. It’s time to move on.”
“I tried. I went on a lot of dating sites and apps, and no luck. I guess women aren’t interested in me. It sucks, because you two are married, Steve and Shelly are married. I feel so left out.”
“If it makes you feel any better, Melody and I aren’t interested in men in general,” Sarah said.
“That’s funny. Maybe the problem is when I fall for a girl, I fall hard,” Michael said. “I fell for Nikki hard, and I fell for Allison hard. Maybe I should stay single for the rest of my life.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Melody said. “The choice is yours, though. We won’t judge you for it.”
“Thanks. That means a lot.”
One day, Emily went downstairs. She wore a boy’s sweater and a pair of baggy jeans. She also cut her hair.
“What the hell is this?” Larry asked. “You look like a boy!”
“I am a boy,” Emily said.
“No, you’re a girl. So, go upstairs and dress like one.”
“I’m transgender, Dad. I was born a girl, but I identify as male. Also, I go by Alex now.”
“You’re middle-name? Alex is short for Alexandra, you know.”
“Alex can also be short for Alexander. Anyway, I got to catch the bus.”
About a half-an-hour later, Martha drove Larry to work.
“Emily is a special little snowflake,” Larry said.
“He goes by Alex, now,” Martha said.
“Her name is Emily. Our daughter is a special little snowflake, who’s living in a fantasy land. She thinks she’s a boy. But guess what, Emily will always be biologically female.”
“Why can’t you accept Alex for who he is?”
“I’m not going to accept something that I don’t want to understand. I will never accept this transgender bullshit and nobody else should either. It’s no wonder why our society is so screwed up.”
Martha looked at Larry with contempt.
“Don’t even talk to Alex,” Martha said.
“Don’t tell me not to talk to my daughter.”
“He’s not our daughter! He’s our son!”
“Okay. Here’s a little biology lesson. Boys and penises and girls have vaginas.”
Martha finally pulled into the parking lot where Larry worked.
“Get out!” Martha yelled.
