“There’s something I don’t understand,” Alex said. “Why can’t Selena’s mother break the curse? And why did Selena’s mother put the curse on her daughter in the first place?”
“Let’s find out,” Angel said.
It turned out that Selena’s mother was the goddess Terra. She left Oberon because Glacier had the reality engine. When Terra came to Earth, she had two kids with a mortal man, Sol and Selena. When Selena was a young woman, she seduced men who were good looking and wealthy. Selena was also obsessed with her appearance. Terra put a curse on Selena to teach her a lesson. Anybody who saw Selena’s face would fall in love with her. Terra was supposed to take the curse off of her daughter, but the other gods of Oberon found Terra and they took away her powers before she had the chance to life the curse.
Angel opened up the reality engine control room door.
“Who’s next?” Angel asked.
“Melody and I will go next,” Sarah said.
So, Melody and Sarah stepped inside the reality engine control room.
Melody, Sara, and Alex all lived together in a rundown apartment. Despite all three of them working, they still struggled to pay the bills. This is why Melody tried to get as many hours at work as possible. Sometimes, she would work for up to 60 hours a week! The problem was, Melody worked so much that she and Sara rarely spent any quality time together.
One day, Melody called Sara from work.
“Hello?” Sara said over the phone.
“Hey, Baby,” Melody said. “Listen, I have to work late tonight.”
“Again?! We were supposed to catch a movie tonight!”
“I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you. I promise.”
“You said that yesterday and the day before that and the day before that! Anyway, I’ll you get back to work.”
Sara hung up the phone.
“Sara!” Melody yelled. “Damn it!”
Out of frustration, Melody threw her phone across her office, and it landed in the lost and found box. When Melody went to retrieve her phone, she noticed an old MP3 player.
“I wonder if this thing still works,” Melody said to her herself.
When Melody turned the MP3 player on, loud music started to play, and a blinding bright light emitted from the device. When the music stopped, and the light went out, Melody saw a mysterious young man standing in front of her. He looked like he was in his late 20’s or early 30’s.
“Hello, I’m Merton, and I’m a genie,” the stranger said as he extended his hand. “You must be my new master.”
“How did you get in here?” Melody asked.
“You’ve released me from that MP3 player when you turned it on,” Merton said.
“Yeah, okay. Anyway, you’re not supposed to be here, so you need to leave.”
“Is that a wish?”
“Well say it.”
“I’m a genie, remember? If you want me to leave, you need to say….”
“I wish you would get out of here!”
Within a blink of an eye, Merton vanished!
“Clearly I’m going insane,” Melody said to herself. “Possibly as a result of working so much. Look at me! I’ve hallucinated about genies, and I’m talking to myself. So screw this, I’m going home.”
Melody got her coat and ran out the door.
Meanwhile, Sara was home, cooking supper, and Steve was getting ready for work.
“Another twelve-hour shift”, Alex said.
“That’s good, ain’t it?” Sara asked.
“Not really. I knew running a business would be a lot of work, but I need a break.
“Meanwhile, I went to university, just to end up working part-time as a cashier, while Melody has been working all those crazy hours. I’m still kicking myself for wasting all of that money on feminist theory.”
Melody entered the apartment.
“I thought you were working late,” Sara said.
“I was going to,” Melody said. “But I’m feeling sick.”
Melody then crashed on the couch. “I just wish this day would end,” she said.
“Oh my God!” Sara said as she was cooking supper. “Look at this!”
The clock on the stove was speeding up.
“That’s weird,” Melody said.
“Not as weird as this,” Alex said. The sun was setting rapidly. Eventually, it was night. Melody, Sara, and Alex continued to stare at the clock on the stove until it stopped at 12:01. All three them, then look at their phones. According to all three of their phones, the time was 12:01.
“What’s going on?” Sara asked.
“I did it,” Melody said. “I wished that this day to end, so it did.”
“What are you talking about?” Sara asked.
“Guys, there’s something I have to tell you. You’re not going to believe it though.”
“Just tell us.”
“Earlier today, I freed a genie named Merton, and now he has to grant my wishes.”
Alex and Sara stared at Melody. Needless to say, they were speechless.
“I’ll prove it”, Melody said. “Merton, are you there?”
Merton then appeared out of nowhere.
“What the hell!” Alex and Sara said at the same time.
“Merton, could you please explain to them that you’re a genie?” Melody asked.
“Of course,” Merton said. “I’m a genie.”
“Can you go into more detail?”
“Of course. Basically, the Genie High Counsel imprisoned me in an MP3 player. When Melody turned it on, she freed me. so now, I have to grant her four wishes.”
“I thought genies had to grant three wishes,” Steve said.
“That’s actually a myth,” Merton said. “I have to grant Melody four wishes, plus, she can cancel one of her wishes. After that, I can do whatever I want.”
“Mel, do you know what this means?” Alex asked. “You could wish for all of us to live in a mansion!”
“I don’t know,” Melody said.
“Why not?” Sara asked. “We deserve better than to live in this dump.”
“How much is the rent?” Merton asked.
“About $1,500 a month,” Alex said. “Plus $250 for utilities. Basically, the economy is crap.”
“Don’t wishes usually go awry?” Melody asked.
“Sometimes”, Merton said. “That’s why you need to be careful what you wish for.”
“Okay then, I wish that Sara, Alex and I live in a three bedroom house. Each bedroom must have its own bathroom, and each bathroom must include their own hot tubs and showers.”
For the next hour, Melody listed off everything that she wanted in her new house.
“Finally, I want a 52 inch TV in the living room, with a lot of video game systems and video games,” Melody said. “I don’t care which games. Surprise me.”
“Is that everything?” Merton asked Melody.
“Are you sure?”
“Are you really sure?”
“For fuck’s sake, yes!”
Merton snapped his figures, and all four of them found themselves in the living room of their new home. It was exactly what Melody wanted.
“Well, I hope you enjoy your new home”, Merton said.
“Wait a minute,” Melody said. “Do you know why I wanted three bedrooms?”
“Because you need a place to stay, don’t you?”
“I can always live in that MP3 Player.”
“Don’t you find is confining?”
“Not really. Although I’m so sick and tired of listening to Cyndi Lauper’s music time after time. You know what, I will live here. Thank you, Melody.”
Later on that night, Melody sat on the balcony.
“How are you are enjoying your new home?” Merton asked.
“I love it,” Melody said.
Melody and Merton then stared at the moon.
“It looks like you got something on your mind,” Merton said.
“What crime did you commit?” Melody asked.
“Does it matter?”
“I fell in love with an mortal woman.”
“Do you wanna talk about it.”
One month later…
“Look at these bills!” Melody said to Alex and Sara as they all sat at the kitchen table. “Utilities, the cable, the phone, all of these bills are all through the roof!”
“We could barely afford to pay the bills when we lived in that apartment”, Steve said. “There’s no way we can afford to pay them here. We just can’t afford this place.”
“Do you think we can get our old apartment back?” Sara asked.
“So, you want me to cancel this wish,” Melody said.
“What choice do we have?”
Merton appeared to Melody, Sara, and Alex.
“I want to cancel my third wish.”
“Granted,” Merton said as he snapped his figures. Melody, Sara, and Alex suddenly found themselves in their old apartment, exactly as they left it.
