“What the fuck just happened?” Allison asked. “How can they be so stupid?”
“I have no idea,” Michael said.
“I do know one thing, our dinner ran away.”
“Is it safe to eat an animal from another planet?”, Alex asked.
“I have no idea,” Allison said.
Meanwhile, back at the ship, Angel was trying to fix one of the ship’s engines.
“So, can you fix the ship’s engine?” Shelly asked.
“I’m working on it. But I’m no engineer.”
“Can we use the reality engine to see what’s happening on Earth?”
“I’m sorry, but we can’t. The reality engine was damaged due to the crash. It won’t turn on. I’m focusing on the ship’s engine, so, you know.”
“Yeah. I know.”
That night, while Alex was in his room, he sensed a presence.
“You’re here, aren’t you?” Alex asked.
Selena appeared out of nowhere. Although, Selena covered her face with a scarf and a pair of sunglasses.
“Yes, I am,” Selena said. “I suppose I have some explaining to do. I’m half mortal and half goddess. My father is a mortal. Deities are forbidden to get involved with humans, so my mother came to Earth.”
“Why did you follow us?”
“Because I’m also a Space Time Mender. Plus, I really needed to avoid Glacier. Even though she’s my cousin, she’s a total bitch.”
“Is that why you ghosted me, because you can’t get involved in mortal affairs? It’s a bit too late for that, don’t you think?”
As Alex and Selena talked, the ship’s alarm sounded. Soldiers
from the Kratos Army attacked the Space Time Mender’s ship. Angel was unable to
repair the ship’s shields, so Shelly used her powers to create a force field
around the ship instead.
While the Kratos Army fired at the ship, Angel used to ship’s guns to fire back, and Kratos Army quickly retreated.
“Angel, I don’t think I can use my powers anymore,” Shelly said.
“It looks like I’ll have to fix the shields,” Angel said. “Then I’ll go back to fixing our engine.”
That same night, Alex introduced the Space Time Menders to Selena. Selena told the Space Time Menders everything she told Alex.
“This is great,” Angel said. “We now stand a chance against the Kratos Army.”
“You mean, we didn’t before?” Shelly asked. “Thanks for the
confidence, I says sarcastically.”
After that attack, the Kratos Army were nowhere near the Space Time Menders for about a week.
“It’s too quiet,” Shelly said.
“I agree,” Steve said. “Since the reality engine isn’t working, we have no idea what the Kratos Army is planning.”
“On the plus, it gives time for Angel to make repairs to the ship,” Alex said.
“That’s true,” Shelly said. “But Angel’s doing all that work herself. Maybe she can teach how to fix the ship. Then again, that may take up more time.”
Angel taught the Space Time Menders everything she knew about her ship. Unfortunately everything Angel taught them, went way over their heads. However, they did help by searching for various types of metals.
Selena and Alex went their own way.
“You’re a demi-god?” Alex asked.
“Yes,” Selena said. “I’m also a Space Time Mender. Did I
already tell you that?”
“Right. How did I know you were on the ship?”
“No clue. Here’s what I don’t understand. I’m not sure if my father is from Earth or Oberon. It’s like my mother told me two different versions of her past.”
“Oh. Those are different memories from multiple timelines. I’ll teach you how to compartmentalize those memories. Can you turn invisible?”
“No. There are multiple universes in existence. Some are
similar to ours, while others are different, I assume you know that, since you
have the reality engine.”
“Here’s what you may not know. Each universe has different universes within them. Think of each universe as layers of an onion. Deities can travel between universe.”
“So, the multiverse is a bag of onions.”
For some reason, Selena and Alex laughed at that stupid comment. As they walked, they came across strange-looking structures.
“It looks like we’ve found civilization,” Alex said.
“I’m going to take a quick look at the town,” Selena said. “Or whatever it is. I’ll go through another realm, so nobody will see me.”
“Maybe it would be best to head back to base. You can check out the town later.”
“That’s a good idea.”
Alex and Selena walked about a 100 feet before Selena yelled, “stop!”
“What’s the matter?” Alex asked.
“There are land mines around,” Selena said.
“I can’t see them. The grass is too tall.”
“You can’t see them, but I can.”
“The Kratos Army must have planted them. But how did they plant them so fast and without us knowing?”
“This is what they’ve must have done all week.”
For a split second, Alex thought they were doomed, but then he laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Selena asked.
“We’re Space Time Menders,” I said. “We can create a portal back to base.”
That’s exactly what Alex and Selena did.
Meanwhile, Allison and Michael searched for scrap metal
They’ve searched for almost an hour without any luck. Along
the way, they saw a beautiful field full of pink and red roses.
“That’s so beautiful,” Allison said.
“It is,” Michael said. “It would be a nice spot to have a picnic.
However, Michael had a vision of the field exploding just seconds from now.
“I think we should get out of here,” Michael said. “There are explosives that are about to go off.”
“Good idea,” Allison said calmly. One moment Michael and Allison were standing close to the field without a care in the world. The next minute, they were running for their lives. They ran about 10 feet before the explosives went off. Thankfully, neither one of them were hurt.
“We need to get back to the ship,” Michael said.
So, Allison and Michael created portals that brought us back to the ship.
“You know, we could create a portal back to the ship,” Allison said.
“Why didn’t we do that sooner?” Michael asked.
“Because we’re stupid.”
When the Space Time Menders returned to their ship, they talked about what happened while they were looking for scrap metal. They’ve concluded that was the locals who’ve planted the land mines.
“If they tried to attack us, they’ll try to attack the Kratos soldiers too,” Shelly said.
“Except they don’t have the power to create portals,” Alex said.
“So, the Kratos Army’s attention will be divided between us and the locals,” Allison said.
“Our attention will also be divided between the Kratos Army and the local,” Angel said. “Since I’m currently unable to fix the ship’s engines, Shelly and I have managed to fix the shields. So now, I can see what’s wrong with the reality engine.”
“What do we do until then?” Shelly asked.
“Selena has gone to town to see what it’s like” Alex said. “Nobody will see her.”
Selena came back right to the ship a minute later.
“You’re not gonna believe this,” Selena said. “Actually, maybe you will. Those buildings that Alex and I saw are spaceships. They belong to a species of aliens…uh, I can’t pronounce the name. Anyway, they came to this planet to conduct an experiment. I didn’t get the details, but it had something to do with plant life. Since we and the Kratos Army crash landed here, we’ve contaminated their project. Because of us, they’re gonna destroy the planet.”
“I thought of something,” Shelly said. “We’re not powerful to create portals at long distances, but if we can combine our powers, we might be able to create a portal where we can get back to Earth.”
“But we have a problem,” Angel said. “We can’t leave the reality engine behind.”
Michael suddenly had another psychic vision. Several volcanoes erupted around the planet. Lava consumed everything in the ship, including the reality engine. Michael then saw holes in the fabric of time and space. Within these holes, Michael saw alternate histories, and many possible futures of Earth. Michael also saw people end up in the wrong time period.
“This is all supposed to happen,” Michael said. “Turning back time isn’t ripping the space time continuum, it’s the destruction of the reality engine. That’s why we were born with our powers. We have to fix the damage that we’ve caused.”
Suddenly, a near-by volcano erupted.
“There’s no time like the present,” Angel said.
Despite being in the middle of the destruction of this unknown planet, the Space Time Menders cleared their minds. They all focused on a particular place on Earth, Bowering Park in St. John’s, Newfoundland. They imagined a portal opening up, connecting the ship to the park. They used all of our energy to focus, and eventually a portal opened up.
Earth – 2043
Michael finally arrived home to his wife, Miranda. She was sitting at the kitchen table, in front of her laptop. Her face lit up like a lantern.
“Michael!” Miranda said. “Look at this!”
Michael looked at Miranda’s laptop and he saw the crowd funding page that she set up.
“You have enough money to get the cure!” Miranda said.
As cliché and cheesy as this may sound, Miranda and Michael hugged each other while tears of joy rolled down their cheeks.
Michael had a doctor’s appointment two weeks later.
When Michael and Miranda went to the hospital, they had their appointment with Dr. Edwards.
“In order for the cure to work, I’ll have to give you one injection a week for the next seven weeks,” Dr. Edwards said. “The cure may leave you temporarily sterile, though.”
“It will be worth it,” Michael said.
Michael always wanted kids. However, since Michael and Miranda were in their 40’s, it was unlikely that would happen.
“There’s one more thing I must warn you about,” Dr. Edwards said. “This may hurt a little.”
“Thanks for the heads up,” Michael said.
As Dr. Ewards injected the cure, Michael had another psychic vision of Allison going into labor.
“It’s too soon,” Allison said.
After Michael got his injection, he and Miranda went home to have supper.
“Michael, is there something wrong?” Miranda asked. “You seem distracted.”
“I guess I’m a little worried,” Michael said. “Could it be possible that my body may reject the cure?”
“That’s impossible. I think you’re being paranoid.”
“I guess you’re right. All of my life as soon as I find happiness, there’s always something that pulls the rug from under my feet.”
“Everybody feels that way. You need to get your mind off of things. I have an idea. Let’s watch The Fast and Furious 30.”
The next day, the Space Time Menders gathered for a meeting.
“We have something very serious to discuss,” Allison said. “I’ve noticed that none of you have wished Maddie a happy 24th birthday. So, let’s sing Happy Birthday.”
As the Space Time Menders sang Happy Birthday to Maddie, Michael had yet another psychic vision. Allison was looking through a calendar on her phone. She started from Maddie’s birthday, and she worked her way backwards nine months.
Michael didn’t know what to think of this psychic vision, so he ignored it.
The next day, Michael was found dead in his bedroom. The cause of death: a stroke.
Michael’s friends, family, and all the Space Time Menders attended his wake.
“It’s not fair,” Miranda said.
“I know,” Shelly said.
“He even said as soon as he finds happiness, there’s always something that will pull the rug out from under his feet. The thing is, the rug was pulled out from under my feet as well.”
While Shelly was trying to comfort Miranda, and while everybody talked, Allison looked at Michael’s dead body.
“I’m so sorry, Michael,” Allison whispered. “I know how much you’ve wanted kids of your own. I should have told you that Maddie’s your daughter.
